Cézembre is an inhabited island located to the north of Saint-Malo. Rest and relaxation on the sand of the hottest beach in the region, the only one facing due south. Gaze in peace and quiet upon the beauty of the Emerald Coast from the sea. Make the most of swimming and lazing about. In August 1944, this granite island - strongly fortified by the German army as part of the Atlantic wall and the Saint-Malo Fortress - was intensely bombarded for close to a month by the Allied bombers, using napalm bombs for one of the first times in Europe. Over 20,000 bombs were released. The island only yielded on 2 September due to a lack of water. The surviving German soldiers - having resisted in this hell - received a military salute from the American soldiers arriving on the island.
Due to these bombings, the island offers sparse vegetation and a tormented relief. Over 2,000 bomb craters can be found there. It is still not entirely clear of mines, and access to the most part of the northern zone is prohibited, but the southern zone with the beach is accessible. The island offers a restaurant that is independent of our Company.
Make sure you bring a picnic, sunscreen, sunglasses and hats!
